Some comics steal jokes from other comics. They might do it deliberately, or perhaps unwittingly—imagining an idea is uniquely theirs when they’ve actually heard it before. But the good news is that in the age of AI, comedians are still stealing from other humans. Theoretically you could truly take the lazy way out and prompt Chat GPT with joke requests. But that’s not happening. BECAUSE AI AIN‘T FUNNY.
I mean sure, you can ask it for jokes. I even gave it a try. Since a lot of my comedy is about being an old Boomer, I prompted it for a joke about old age. The unedited result:
‘’I told my grandson I was born before the Internet. He stared at me like I just admitted to churning my own butter in a thunderstorm.”
Honestly, I don’t even know what that means.
Why doesn’t AI have a viable sense of humor? Good question. So I asked AI. It said:
- Lack of human experience and emotion
- Lack of timing, tone, and delivery
- Lack of nuance and subtext
- Inability to improvise
- Lack of an original voice—AI jokes are constructed rather than felt
Great job, AI! And you are right. AI has no human experience to share. It has never had its feet up in stirrups at the gynecologist. It has never had a prostate exam. It has never been told, “It;s not you, it’s me.” It has never had its credit card declined. It can’t even make a decent dick joke, because it doesn’t have a dick!
So keep stealing those jokes, people! To steal is human. But do it fast, before AI grows genitalia.
